Milton Florida is just north of Interstate 10. It derives the name from "mill town." As with neighboring Bagdad and other towns on deep water, Milton was a port and manufacturing center for the 19th lumber industry.
The City of Milton is among the oldest cities in Florida, incorporated in 1844 under the Florida Territorial Acts of 1844. In founding days, the Blackwater River served as the main transportation artery for timber, lumber, brick, naval stores and ship building industries. Milton roots go back to the early 1800's when people began settling along the banks of the river.
Preservation efforts have resulted in the revival of a charming old Southern town which still functions as the center of Santa Rosa County.
