Chumukla was important as a health resort in the early 20th century. The town was named for an Indian word meaning "healing waters" because of the mineral springs in the area. Hotel fires and changes in the economy of the area caused the decline of the resort industry in the area. Bottling the spring water continued for many years. There are few structures remaining to denote the importance of the small town such as the school building pictured below. The early federalist style schoolhouse building joins a later addition with a breezeway. -
The building is an imposing and formal style for a small rural school. -
The wide, low-pitched gable surmounting the facade of the building in a classical style shows the federal influence. Units of stone are used to accentuate the corners of the building. The classical revival architectural style of the early 20th century can be seen even in the small community of Chumuckla.
