Foley: The Gift Horse Restaurant

The old hardware store in Foley was renovated to house the Gift Horse Restaurant. Beaded walls and ceiling highlight the interior of one of the oldest buildings in the town. Large brass chandeliers light the main dining room. The restaurant is located at 209 Laurel Avenue. Jackie McLeod and her husband, Dr. Kenneth McLeod, bought the historic building in 1984. The original building was built in 1912 as the Foley Progressive Club. The club's membership consisted of a group of men, the founders of Foley. Mr. Foley was from Chicago and thought that the town needed a place to hold concerts, dances and cultural events. In 1937 the building was sold to the American Legion, Post 99 and was used during World War II as the U.S.O. Club. A skating rink and then a hardware store were the next two uses for the old building until it was rediscovered by the McLeod's.
