Century: Town

The town of Century affords a peaceful small-town atmosphere. It is the western gate to the Sunshine State and is graced by the peaceful Escambia River. It is also home to Lake Stone, a 130 acre freshwater lake stocked with bass, bluegill and channel catfish. Century's history reflects a mill town boom and gradual decline until the Century Prison was built in 1992. The addition of a helicopter manufacturing plant in 2001 infused capitol and enterprise into the town's reconstruction. The town was built in 1901 by a lumberman named Alger and a landowner named Sullivan. Labor problems in Alabama caused them to choose a tract near the black settlement of Teaspoon. The mill provided the jobs, the stores, schools, housing and services. (Source: Jerry Fischer and Neal Collier, A Pictorial History: Settlements Along the Escambia-Conecuh River)

The town was planned to have First through Fourth Streets. First somehow became Front Street, porbably because it went in "front" of the mill. Third ended up as Church Street because the Methodists and Baptists built thier church houses there.
